In this edition of Marketer of the Week, Ignite Visibility spotlights Julia Rubano, senior content strategist at Starship.
Ignite Visibility applauds her for spearheading Starship’s marketing efforts and taking the brand to the next level of success.
Julia Rubano
Julia Rubano majored in Creative Writing (Poetry) and Film at Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut.
Since graduating in 2014, she has run the marketing gamut, having worked on everything from brand ideation and user experience to email conception and development.
On her portfolio site, Julia Rubano describes herself as “a creative, strategic thinker indebted to fostering a connection between brand, narrative, and audience.”
She has certainly stayed true to that mission, serving in content-specific roles across industries over the past 7 years.
Outside of work, she is passionate about coffee, pasta, her dog, and all things East Coast, where she calls home.
Julia Rubano’s Current Role at Starship
Julia Rubano was one of the first hires at Starship. After joining the team in 2019, the financial technology company has grown to over 100,000 users nationwide.
In her current role, she is tasked with building out content strategies for the blog, social media channels, and influencer marketing.
Julia Rubano also established the company’s brand messaging, the initial marketing strategy, and its voice.
She even laid the foundation for the structure of the marketing team in 2021 and championed the hiring of more senior-level marketers on her team.
The Starship blogs—which she manages—account for 25% of Starship’s site visits. Her next big project initiative is to establish an SEO strategy for the company.
Atlas of Caregiving
From August 2018 to September 2019, Julia Rubano served as a content marketing consultant for Atlas of Caregiving, a nonprofit that aims to improve the caregiving experience through innovative research.
Her copy helped readers to understand that caregiving can be achieved in many forms, to various extents, and at all stages of life.
Backcountry.com
Founded in 1996 in Park City, Utah, Backcountry.com specializes in high-performing outdoor gear.
During her time at Backcountry.com, Julia Rubano was promoted twice within a 20-month period—from email marketing copywriter to brand marketing copywriter.
There, she monitored numerous copy-related projects and ensured all moving parts of creative were prepared for implementation and ready at launch.
In fact, she did such a thorough job as a copy creator she achieved an average of 3 million views per month.
She did this by contributing to site-leading campaign storylines to engage site visitors, converting them into the customer journey funnel.
Moon Juice
In November 2018, Julia Rubano was hired as a copywriter and branding consultant for Moon Juice, a health food company based in Culver City, California that offers plant-sourced beauty and wellness products.
During this 3-month project, she researched adaptogenic blends, recipes, and usage patterns, and leveraged her findings to concept and execute social and email campaigns for the brand.
Management Experience
Not only is Rubano a creative and strategic marketer, but she’s also a leader. For an inbound marketing agency launched in 2014, Julia Rubano managed a team of two designers and a consulting editor to deliver creative marketing and communication support.
She also developed and delivered project briefs and coordinated project timelines for both her in-house team and her clients.
