Twitter Launching New Timeline Ad Network
This past week, Twitter announced a new programmatic ad network. It will place ads in Twitter timelines that publishers display on their websites.
The new network will be available to a few US publishers in the near future.
Here’s what Twitter had to say about the program:
You already enjoy the power of real-time Tweets on your webpage through embedded Timelines. Now, let it generate revenue for your site. The Twitter Timeline network is the first ad program that allows publishers to offer real-time content to their audiences and drive incremental revenue with targeted ads.
If you want to be one of the publishers chosen by Twitter as early pioneers of the new ad format, you’ll need to submit your name, email address, and website URL for consideration.
Report: Google Shipped More Smart Speakers Than Amazon in Q1
It looks like Google Home is catching up to Amazon Alexa.
According to a recent estimate from Canalys, Google shipped more smart speakers in the first quarter of 2018 than Amazon. That includes 3.2 million shipments of Google Home devices and 2.5 million shipments of Amazon Alexa devices.
The report also said that Google Home sales grew a whopping 483%. In contrast, Amazon Alexa sales grew only 8%.
Keep in mind, though, Google Home was starting from a much smaller base. So those numbers can be deceptive.
Regarding overall market share, Amazon holds a commanding lead with 73%. Google is a distant second with only 14%.
But the gap is closing.
Quora Now Running Native Image Ads
Quora is launching images ads for both mobile and desktop platforms.
If you’d like to run an image ad on Quora, you’ll have to start by uploading a company logo. It needs to be 30×30 pixels.
Then, you’ll need to upload the image you want for your ad. Quora recommends a pic that’s 1,200×628 pixels but the minimum is 600×314 pixels.
Also, you can’t fill your image with text. As of now, the text limit is just 20% of the overall image.
Quora says that it will automatically convert image ads to text ads in some cases.
StumbleUpon Will Shut Down Next Month
After 16 years, StumbleUpon is finally shutting down.
As the name implies, it’s an aggregation site that enables visitors to “stumble” upon content they might appreciate. Once upon a time, it was also a favorite of SEOs who were looking for backlinks to their sites.
Over the years, it accumulated 40 million users and 60 billion stumbles.
Cofounder Garrett Camp says that he’ll be taking the lessons he learned from StumbleUpon to his new discovery platform, mix.com.
StumbleUpon will officially go dark on June 30.
The Google Trends Keyword Research Tool Has Been Updated
The Google Trends tool just got a makeover.
The new version has new features, easier navigation, and more ways to gather data.
For starters, the user interface has changed. It’s more in line with the Material Design framework that looks great whether you’re on a mobile or desktop platform.
There are also some neat keyword research features:
- An updated trending searches section that shows what’s trending in search right now (minute-by-minute or day-by-day)
- A section of curated news content
- Year in Search data going back to 2001
The tool is also using a color intensity infographic (that some might call a heatmap) to show which keywords are popular in a specific region.
Google: It Doesn’t Matter How Many Slashes You Have in Your URL
You might think that your rank will suffer if your URL has a high number of slashes in it. According to Google’s John Mueller, it won’t.
This past week on Twitter, somebody asked Mueller the following question: “how about number of directories in urls? Working on a site right now where an architecture like http://url.com/dir1/dir2/dir3/dir4 … really makes a lot of sense but worried that 4-5 levels (max) might be bad in terms of seo.”
Here’s how he responded: “We don’t count slashes in a URL – use what makes sense for you, giving yourself room to grow in the future without having to change all URLs.”
Facebook Launching New Influencer Marketplace Platform
Influencer marketing seems to be one of the more popular online strategies these days. That’s why Facebook is offering an influencer marketplace platform.
Here’s how it works: you use the platform to select the audience you want to reach by location, age, gender, and other characteristics. Then, the tool will provide you with a list of influencers with audiences that match the one you specified. It will also show you follower stats for each of the influencers.
Once you have that info, you can reach out to one or more of those influencers and set up some deals to promote your brand.
As of now, the new program is only in test mode.
