Social Media Day San Diego kicked off on Monday at the downtown Marriott Marquis and was packed with powerhouse speakers offering tips and tricks in the industry. Speakers ranged from social media guru, Mari Smith, to local business owners using social media to even YouTube and Vine star, Zach King. The overarching theme throughout all presentations was finding your niche with quality content.
Mari Smith on Facebook
Mari discussed the declining reach on Facebook, which means the rising Facebook stock. She even predicted it in the future, there may be a 0% reach for business pages.
She emphasized while quality content is good that it’s important to make sure people are tuned in.
“Content is King, but engagement is Queen and she rules the house,” she said.
Zach King on Vine and YouTube
For years, Zach has been generating viral content on YouTube that has garnered millions of views. His video, Jedi Kittens has been a fan favorite and helped catapult him to fame.
His presentation focused on the power of a quality story and ‘lead with smile, which leads to a share.’
And like Mari, he indicated that the right audience is essential. “Publishing everywhere is publishing nowhere.” Know where your audience is and content must be tailored to each platform.
He also offered 3 insightful tips when building your brand:
- Find your voice
- Find your team
- Find your audience
Michael Stelzner of Social Media Examiner, John Lee Dumas from Entrepreneur on Fire, and Tyler Anderson from Casual Fridays all discussed the resurgence of pod casts because of smart phones.
The group focused on how they seek to develop a very loyal following through their segments. Pod casting has also become a watering hole for discussion and new potential customers.
Jenn Herman on Instagram
Social media consultant, Jenn Herman, brought some notable tips for Instagram.
For content she suggested using images that are organic, native and don’t look like ads. She also emphasized how it’s essential to maintain a strong call to action in posts so individuals know what to do.
Jenn also encouraged using videos as they get 3 times more engagement.
